It is no surprise to those that know me, I love to eat. I also love a snappy renovation and am always a fan of a good before and after photo. Ergo, this is why my next blog is about dining room renovations with some great before and afters. The dining room (to me) is the heart of the home (also sometimes my office). With most clients, I have found - it is definitely the most underfunded and underused space in a home. Hopefully, after spending more time at home this year, we will inspire you to make the most of your dining space. Read on to see our top simple dining room upgrade solutions.
Client Ask - Can We Use My Existing Furniture?
If you don’t want to renovate and rehaul your entire dining room, there are simple updates you can make to give the room new life. That is exactly what we did in the Saqer Residence in West Hollywood. We kept the existing paint color, buffet cabinet, rug, dining table, and 2 chairs. By making a few tweaks and changes we were able to refresh the entire space and give it a clean finished look. We swapped out the round wall mirror for a taller architectural style mirror which really opened up the space, making the room appear larger. We added a bench to the dining table on one side for more seating and swapped out the oversized chandelier for a gorgeous size-appropriate one. For visual interest, we added a pair of metal bookcases on each side of the mirror to display decorative pieces. We also added curtains to soften the space and tie in colors from the rug.
Client Ask - Can We Modernize Our French Traditional Space?
You can update your dining room with a fresh take on an old-school vibe with some lighter, modern furniture and decor. At the Wetzel Residence in Westlake Village, we did just that. We transformed their dining room from overly frenchy, to modern and clean with just a few tweaks. First, we swapped their old dark rectangular table for a gorgeous light marble top round table. The change in shape makes better use of the space and allows for just as much seating. We added linen slip-covered chairs (washable) and wall mirrors to open up the room. The table decor, grey stripes in the curtains, and tree in the corner help break up the white colors to add bits of contrast.
Client Ask - HELP - We Need a Complete Overhaul!
Depending on when you last updated your dining space, it may be time for a full renovation. At the Decaussin Residence in Chatsworth, we completely transformed their dining room and created a brand new space that’s unrecognizable from the original. The room went from dated to modern and chic. The original space felt choppy with a dining table, cat tower, piano, and fireplace. It didn’t have a clear identity. So we took out the fireplace to expand their use of space and created sleek custom built-in cabinets for storage. We updated the floors to a lighter and more modern color, added bright fresh paint, a new table, chairs, and a chandelier. We created a neutral and clean pallet with polished nickel accents to give the room a luxurious and finished look.
